West African Skies Beckon More
Carriers Fast-Growing Economies Prompt Interest
From Local Airlines, Others
Next year,
there will be one more: Africa World, founded by Ghana's Togbe Afede XIV,
a king of eastern Ghana's Asogli state. The airline plans to offer the
same (domestic) flights..., but targeting first-time fliers, says Acting
Chief Operations Officer Sean Mendis.
"If you make travel easy for
them," Mendis says, "one of the first things people like to do—as a sign
of their freedom, as a sign of their prosperity—they want to get on a
plane, visit some family, do some more business."
Africa World Airlines is
coming soon to Ghana in
early-2012.

Africa World Airlines
Limited (Africa World), the new
generation airline, is pleased to announce the receipt of an Air
Carrier Licence (ACL) issued by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority on
Friday, 4th March 2011.
The ACL, licence number
222, serves as the authorization for Africa World to commence operation of
scheduled air passenger and cargo services within Ghana and the West
African sub-region.
Speaking at a
presentation ceremony at the Kotoka International Airport this afternoon,
Air Commodore (Rtd) Kwame Mamphey, Director-General of the Ghana Civil
Aviation Authority (GCAA) congratulated the Africa World management team
on achieving this milestone. He welcomed the entrance of a new carrier on
domestic routes in order to increase competition and lower airfares. He
also counselled Africa World to ensure that the highest standards of
safety and reliability were maintained, and advised them of GCAA’s
constant support to achieve this end.
Togbe Afede XIV, CEO of
SAS Finance Group and Chairman of Africa World Airlines Limited, expressed
his appreciation for the assistance and guidance of the Ministry of
Transportation and the GCAA through the licensing process. He assured the
public that Africa World intends to revolutionise domestic transportation
in Ghana by making air travel affordable to many.
Africa World Airlines
Limited is a Ghanaian private-sector joint venture between SAS Finance
Group, an integrated investment banking and financial advisory firm, and
Chinese investment and technical partners. Africa World intends to provide
low cost scheduled airline passenger services from Accra to domestic and
regional destinations, using jet aircraft throughout its route network.
The route network will be structured to create a hub-and-spoke model
centred upon Accra, allowing seamless one-change connections between
multiple city pairs.
Africa World intends to
commence flight operations in mid-2011 with all-jet services from Accra to
Kumasi, Tamale and Takoradi.
